Ice Check From Space: SENTINEL-2
At-home ice checking often begins with a look at MODIS satellite data. “With its sweeping 2,330-km-wide viewing swath, MODIS sees every point on our world every 1-2 days…”
SENTINEL-2 is another satellite that surveys the earth every five days at the equator and every 2-3 days at middle latitudes. SENTINEL-2 is “equipped with an opto-electronic multispectral sensor for surveying with a sentinel-2 resolution of 10 to 60 m in the visible, near infrared (VNIR), and short-wave infrared (SWIR) spectral zones, including 13 spectral channels, which ensures the capture…”
SENTINEL-2 takes a few more steps than looking at MODIS but the views are well worth the effort.

Regatta Watch: WSSA Postponed
The 2022 Wisconsin Stern Steering Association regatta has been postponed to February 19 and 20. The next update will be Sunday, February 13. Check back here at that time. The Northwest Ice Yacht Association regatta takes precedence. The prediction changed, not enough melt today, not much expected tomorrow, and the wind dropped quite low for the weekend. Let us know if you find conditions somewhere.

Bucky on the B
Bucky on the B
University of Wisconsin mascot Buckingham Ulysses “Bucky” Badger was seen yesterday at the Frozen Assets Festival kicking the tires on the stern-steerer, the MARY B.
Bucky’s been around campus for a while, and no doubt remembers the fleet of stern-steerers that Bill and Carl Bernard kept for university students.
Today is the last day of Frozen Assets Festival at the Edgewater and your chance to see the MARY B.
Ice Yacht Academy

Page from 1937 East High School yearbook in Madison, Wisconsin.
Many Four Lakes Ice Yacht Club members graduated from Madison’s East High School, including Bill Mattison, Jack Ripp, Dave Rosten, Bob Brockel, and more. Don Sanford came across this page from the 1937 East High School yearbook that again proves ice sailing has been a constant in this city’s history. 1937 would have been too early for the sailors mentioned, and when I have time, I’ll take a look at the archives to see who might have been members of the East High School Ice Yacht Club.
