This class thrives on the latest state-of-the-art technology.

Fastest Sail Powered Boats on the Planet

Skeeters are the “Formula One” in the world of ice yacht racing.

B Skeeters

B Skeeters maintain the classic lines of the wooden Skeeter.

Nite

The Nite class has competed as a separate class in the ISA since 1996.

Champions

Bill Mattison 4LIYC: 11 time champion
Dan Clapp NSIBYC: 9 time champion

Commitment

“Sufficiently committed skippers find the greatest challenge in these boats,
where design, building, and maintenance skills share equal roles with sailing ability.” Charles Johnson

International Skeeter Association Regatta

The International Skeeter Association (ISA) was organized in the late 1930s and the first ISA regatta was sailed in 1940. Skeeters were developed on Geneva Lake in Wisconsin. They are piloted by a single skipper and steer from the front of the boat as opposed to the original iceboats which were crewed by two or more and steered from the rear.

The Skeeter is the “Formula One” of ice yachting, a wide open development class where state-of-the-art sailing is seen annually. The only restriction on the Skeeter builder is a 75 square foot sail maximum sail area. While the basic configuration for successful E Skeeters has long been established, significant design improvements have been developed within the Four Lakes fleet. Taller rigs and rear seat Skeeters designed and built by 4LIYC members Bill Mattison and Paul Krueger have brought world championship titles to Madison skippers. In 1989, New Jersey’s Dan Clapp took the ice boating world by storm with his first front-seater and dominated the ISA regatta during the 1990s. Skeeter builders are adept with high tech materials like carbon fiber, and Kevlar. The super powerful Skeeters are the fastest boats on the ice. Sufficiently committed skippers find the greatest challenge in these boats, where design, building, and maintenance skills share equal roles with sailing ability

Photographer Will Johnson joined us at the ISA and Renegade Championship on Lake Monona on Saturday. He has a huge number of photos he’d like to share with us.

If any one wants some extra work done on some of them feel free to pass along my contact info I am happy to help.

The boaters are welcome to use the photos for any personal use, and feel free to post them any icboat.org socials you see fit.

I had a good time watching the racing and hope to come out to more regattas

Via Ken Whitehorse over at the Past Champions Iceboat Shop:

Immediately after the 2022 ISA cookout and trophy presentation, some racers came over to the Past Champions Iceboat Shop and helped roll M-165 on its side. Why? During the first A Skeeter race of the ISA, Krueger was running a fast second and was challenging for first. One more mighty pull on sheet rope would have secured the position! And so one more Herculean pull, and he ripped the pulley blocks out of the deck! Sigh…. There is no time for lamenting; it’s time to repair M165 with a newer and stronger oak backbone! See all you iceboat racers on the lake next week!

FINAL RESULTS
Congratulations to all who participated in the 2022 International Skeeter Association regatta and Renegade Championship on Lake Monona, February 18 – 20. On Sunday morning, the Race Committee decided that strong winds (just like on Friday) would have been too much to safely race and called the regatta complete. We took advantage of every minute of Saturday to get the regatta in.

ISA & Renegade Championship Day 3 AM Update

Photo: Skot Weidmann

Provisional Results

Competitors bore with the course changes due to wind shifts and completed three races in each of their classes on the second day of the ISA and Renegade Championship.
PRO Joe Norton sent the Nites off for their second race when the wind shut down, and he black-flagged the race because it exceeded the time limit. It was a long, cold day on the ice in bright sunshine, we patiently waited, and the wind came back as predicted. There were excellent racing battles in all fleets, particularly the Nite and Renegade.
Racing starts again at 9:30 AM. Below is photo gallery from the Facebook page of Skot Weidmann.

2022 ISA & Renegade Championship Day 1 PM Update

Ice Henge

Racers had hoped that the wind machine would turn on in the afternoon, but the wind arrived earlier than expected. The Nite fleet had lined up to race but 25 mph puffy winds coupled with slippery ice as hard as a diamond had the Race Committee opt for postponement.

Back in the pits, the Madison Fire Department provided entertainment with their ice-cutting operation for Saturday’s Polar Plunge event to raise funds for Special Olympics Wisconsin athletes.

Racing begins at 9 AM on Saturday, with Nites first in the rotation.

Regatta Watch: ISA, Renegade Championship, & Northwest Tentatively Called ON for Marinette/Menominee

Via ISA/NIYA Secretary Steve Schalk.

The 2022 Northwest, Renegade Championship, and ISA  regattas are on for Marinette/Menominee for February 4-6, 2022. The call is tentative based on acquiring more “on the ice” information on Monday and or Tuesday as to thickness and race area. The landings are already thick enough but the thickness in the racing area – and the size available need to be checked. If there is not enough thickness in the racing area for the Big Boats (Stern Steerers) but there is for Skeeters, the ISA would be held and the NIYA postponed.
